Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are vital for our student (including all apprentices studying with us) and staff community. Our university is the place where rich minds and diverse cultures are able to learn, challenge and create. We warmly welcome those of different cultures, ethnicities and beliefs – indeed this very diversity is vital to our success, it is fundamental to our values and enriches life on campus.
We are the first university to have achieved the Athena Swan Gold Award. This marks the first time that an institutional Gold Award has been achieved by a university since the Athena Swan programme was launched in 2005.
We strive to create an inclusive, respectful and considerate environment where all students and staff can bring their authentic selves to work and study, and feel that they belong.
Our Goals
We aim to ensure that:
- All students and staff feel comfortable, safe, included and supported to be their very best in all that they do
- The university is the best it can be, with a high-performing and diverse staff and student body
- All students and staff visibly contribute to the values of the university and its wider impact
To achieve these goals, we aim to attract and recruit students and staff from the widest possible pool of individuals across all groups within the community.
Our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion builds on the Equality Act 2010, ensuring freedom from discrimination on the grounds of age, race, nationality, ethnicity, gender identity, marriage or civil partnership status, disability, sexual orientation, religion, spiritual or political beliefs, caring responsibilities, pregnancy and parental status. We also seek to support individuals with caring responsibilities, those from all socio-economic backgrounds, and those experiencing short-term health impairments.
We take a holistic approach, ensuring that all activity motivated by our equality, diversity and inclusion goals contributes to a better environment for work and study for everyone. Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is closely aligned with our wider aim of supporting the health and wellbeing of all our staff and students. Every student and every member of staff at the University of Nottingham, irrespective of role or level, has a critical role to play in the life of the university.
